Vitamin D is a fat soluble steroid hormone precursor that the body can make from cholesterol and sunlight. Low Vitamin D levels have been linked to depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, auto-immune diseases, and cancer — and at least a quarter of the population is deficient. (Based on outdated, insufficient recommendations.)

Studies suggest the lower the Vitamin D level, the greater the risk of depression.

Why don’t I know about this?

The depressing answer is that it’s incredibly hard to make a lot of money on Vitamin D. Companies can not patent what our body can make with sunlight and cholesterol. It is always more financially rewarding to treat a symptom than to cure a health issue, and so more and more people are prescribed anti-depressants, when they simply aren’t getting any sun.

Don’t I get enough from sunlight?

Maybe. How many hours of nude yoga do you do in your yard each afternoon?

What type should I take?

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol). Try to buy from a quality company. Avoid pressed pills.

How much Vitamin D3 should I take?

1,000iu/day per 25lbs body weight. Always take it with a fat source, like fish oil! I genuinely believe Vitamin D supplementation is the easiest thing you can do to increase your quality of life, and it’s also inexpensive. Do yourself a favor.

I'm loving this fish oil with D3. Top quality, but pricey.
