There was a time, not so many years ago, when a single flight of stairs would leave me winded and in pain. I would spend most of my waking life logged into World of Warcraft, drinking soda, eating garbage, and smoking cigarettes. I hid from friends. I hid from mirrors. I was deeply ashamed of what I had let myself become, and yet I continued to abuse myself. I’m not really sure how fat I got, because I stopped weighing myself, but I know it was over 330lbs at 5’9.
My spine was broken in a number of places during this time, but I refuse to use that as an excuse for treating my body so poorly. An injury doesn’t make you drink soda — and I drank a lot of soda.
When I was 30, I felt as if my life may as well have been over. I was confined to a chair and morbidly obese. I had man-breasts. I had to make an effort to physically see my penis. I’m not trying to be vulgar — just as honest as possible. I was a hot mess.
My life seemed over, that is, until two things happened. The first was a spinal surgery performed by the finest surgeon in the world — thank you Dr. Kim. The second was discovering CrossFit, and through that community I learned about nutrition.
I know what it’s like to be obese. I know how hard everyday life is. I know the judgement and the discrimination and the very real limitations it puts on your life. I also know how to fix it.
At 38, I am happier and healthier than I have ever been, and fitness is not only my passion, but also my career. It’s never too late to start. You’re never too far gone. I can help. I want to help. Come see us at CrossFit Boost or email me: williamlexner@gmail.com
